Mrs. Henriette Niragire has completed her bachelor’ s degree in Environmental Chemistry at the former KIST. In her previous works, she worked at the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) as an environmental facilitator within the Mines department. Her main duties were to assess the impacts of mining activities on the environment, work closely with mine inspectors and finally advise the miners on the best mining practices.
After one year at REMA, she was awarded the OWSD fellowship to pursue her postgraduate studies. She then joined the University of South Africa in Johannesburg where she got admission to the Chemistry department. She did a master’s by research in chemistry and Nanotechnology and focused on Waste water treatment. She synthesized and characterized Chitosan nanofibers made from chitosan natural polymer, which were utilized to remove acidic pharmaceuticals from wastewater. Henriette currently works at LuNa Smelter Ltd as a Senior Chemist. Her duties include but are not limited to : ensuring that the quality of produced tin is meeting the requirement ; supervision of laboratory activities, analysis of different samples being exploration samples or customer’s samples. In addition to her responsibility as a senior chemist, Henriette was appointed as the coordinator of the Integrated Management System involving Quality Management system (ISO 9001), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) and General Requirement for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories (ISO 17025).
Henriette is a member of the Rwandan Association of Women in Science and Engineering (RAWISE) and the Organization of Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
